General Motors CEO defends Volt fires

The CEO of General Motors recently defended the automaker regarding the controversy surrounding the battery fires that occurred in the Chevrolet Volt in 2011.

General Motors recalled more than 8,000 Volts last year in an effort to correct a problem that caused the battery to catch fire, which was discovered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

GM CEO Daniel Akerson said that testing by government regulators resulted in fires after putting the car though rigorous lab tests that no driver would ever experience in the real world. Critics argue that the NHTSA may be biased because the government still has 26.5 percent of General Motors' shares.

"Given the direct government involvement in General Motors, it also prompts questions about whether or not this administration is promoting the rapid distribution of electric vehicles, like the Volt, before doing their homework and understanding how the risks associated with these vehicles should be addressed," Jim Jordan, Ohio state representative, said.

General Motors recently announced sales of more than 9 million vehicles globally, making it the top-selling automaker in the world.

Considering the controversy that continues to surround the Chevrolet Volt, potential car buyers might avoid applying for car financing to purchase the vehicle.
